Rutgers Baseball Falls to Louisville, 6-1

LOUISVILLE, KY - Louisville scored three runs in the first inning and held off the Rutgers baseball team the rest of the way as the Cardinals defeated the Scarlet Knights, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, KY, to earn the series sweep. RU falls to 6-13 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST, while Louisville improves to 10-14 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Louisville scored three runs in the first, aided by Logan Johnson’s two-run home run to right field for the Cardinals. The home run was the only one hit by both teams combined in the three-game series.

Rutgers got back one of those runs in the second inning. Senior Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season to reach base with one out. Freshman Luis Feliz (New Brunswick, NJ) then smacked a double down the right field line to advance Hook to third where junior Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) used a groundout to second base to bring home Hook.

Louisville built a 4-1 lead with another run in the third as Derrick Alfonso hit an RBI single up the middle off RU starter Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NY) with two outs.

The Cardinals got two more runs on three hits in the fifth to make in 6-1, signaling the end to Spicer’s day. Junior Mark Lampariello (Annandale, NJ) came on in relief, getting the third out of the inning.

Spicer, who pitched 5.1 innings to earn the win on Wednesday against St. Peter’s, worked 4.2 innings, allowing five earned runs (six overall) on nine hits with three strikeouts in suffering his first loss of the season (3-1). Lampariello worked a perfect sixth and seventh before giving up a triple with one out in the eighth. Lefty Joe Baione (Staten Island, NY) came in to face Louisville’s lefty batter, getting the Scarlet Knights out of the inning unscathed.

Louisville’s Trystan Magnuson got the win, surrendering one run on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings. The Cardinals used three pitchers over the final three innings, capped by closer Brian Halford in the ninth.

Sophomore Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and Feliz led the Scarlet Knights with two hits apiece on the day. Feliz set up the Scarlet Knights’ only run in the first inning with the first of his two doubles in the game.

Rutgers returns home where the Scarlet Knights will begin a six-game homestand Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game against Rider at the Class of 1953 Complex.
