Rutgers Baseball Plays Princeton to Extra-Inning Tie

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers baseball team rallied for three runs in the eighth to tie Princeton at 3-3, but the game was called in the 11th inning due to darkness Wednesday afternoon at Class of 1953 Complex.

Princeton (4-11-1) scored two runs on three hits, including a double and a triple in the third inning and added a third run in the sixth inning to open a 3-0 lead on Rutgers (7-13-1).

Facing the 3-0 deficit and down to their last three outs, the Scarlet Knights plated three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game up. RU put its first two runners on base as sophomore Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) drew a leadoff walk and fellow sophomore Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) smacked a single to right field to advance Frazier over to third. Both runners moved into scoring position as Hill advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Scarlet Knights did not seize the opportunity immediately as pinch hitter Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) and right fielder Luis Feliz (New Brunswick, NJ) each struck out. Senior Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA), however, came through for RU with a double down the right-field line to bring home both runners. Junior Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) then singled up the middle to score Hook for the tying run. New pitcher Steven Miller came in to end the inning with a strikeout for Princeton.??

The Scarlet Knights had another shot to win it in the ninth with Frazier on first and two outs. However, on a very close call, Frazier was called out for the third out of the inning as he was trying to steal second base, sending the game to extra innings.

After a 1-2-3 10th inning for the Tigers, RU threatened once again with runners on first and second with two outs but Miller got recently-inserted Vincent Sangemino (Nutley, NJ) to fly-out to end the inning.

Neither team really threatened in the 11th and with the sun nearly set, the umpire made the call to end the game.

Rutgers had several scoring opportunities with 14 hits in the game, but the Scarlet Knights stranded 12 runners in the contest. RU had a golden opportunity in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out with their three and four-spot hitters up, but Frazier popped out to the first baseman in foul territory and Hill flied out to center field to end the inning.??

Frazier made a nice defensive play in the eighth inning to deny the Tigers another run as Princeton's Sal Iacono hit a ball up the middle with runners on first and third, but the RU shortstop hustled over to prevent the ball from reaching the outfield and flicked it over to get the runner out at second base to end the inning.

RU starter Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) worked 5.2 innings before Ryan Bradley (Overland Park, KS) relieved him to end the sixth. Jansen struck out two batters, allowing all three runs on seven hits. Bradley gave up two hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings before handing the ball over to junior Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) with one out in the eighth. Lillis was spectacular with 3.2 perfect innings, including four strikeouts as the Tigers never threatened beyond the eighth inning.

Princeton used seven pitchers in the game. Michael Zaret allowed all three runs on three hits, getting just two outs in the eighth inning before leaving.??

Rutgers takes a day off before returning to BIG EAST play, welcoming Villanova to the Class of 1953 Complex for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
