Jansen Pitches Rutgers Past Lafayette, 8-2

PISCATAWAY, NJ  - Senior Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, giving up just one earned run as Rutgers cruised to an 8-2 victory over Lafayette Wednesday afternoon at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex.

RU is now undefeated in its last eight mid-week games, improving to 19-18-1 overall on the season. Lafayette falls to 18-22 with the loss.

Jansen gave up a double to Ian Law on the first pitch of the game, but quickly settled down to retire the next 13 batters. Law, however, eventually scored, handing Jansen his only earned run of the game.

The Scarlet Knights quickly erased the one-run deficit with four runs in the second inning. With one out and designated hitter Tom Edwards (West Caldwell, NJ) on first base, Rutgers used four-straight hits to bring home three runs, while a sacrifice fly plated the fourth. Junior Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) singled to left field, moving Edwards to second, before catcher Jason Downey (Ballston Lake, NY) smacked a double down the left-field line to drive home Edwards from second. Senior Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) then lined a single to right field to bring home Querns from third, while moving over to second base on the play at the plate. Junior Mike Bionde (Pompton Lakes, NJ) capped the hitting barrage with a single to left field to bring home Downey, also moving over to second on the throw to the plate. The Scarlet Knights’ final run came courtesy of Todd Frazier’s (Toms River, NJ) sacrifice fly to center field, which plated Grose.

RU added single runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 6-1 lead on the Leopards. Downey’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the third brought home a run and in the fourth, a pickoff attempt eventually tagged out Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) between first and second base for the final out of the inning, but not before Bionde scored from third base during the run down.

A bobble by Jansen on a slow roller back to the mound in the fifth gave Lafayette its first base runner since the first batter of the game. It proved to be costly as the next two batters reached base on a single and a walk, respectively, moving the lead runner to third, where he eventual came around to score the Leopard’s second run of the contest.

RU capped its scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh to further extend its lead to 8-2 and relievers Mark Lampariello (Annandale, NJ) and Tim Woodhull (Princeton Junction, NJ) each worked a scoreless inning in the eighth and ninth, respectively to complete the victory.

Jansen earned his first win in his second start of the season, improving to 1-0. Lafayette starter Steve Roberts fell to 2-4 on the season, giving up four runs on five hits in two innings.

Hill finished the day 2-for-4 from the plate, extending his hitting streak to 10 games – the longest of any Scarlet Knight this season.

The day wasn’t all positive for the Scarlet Knights, however, as junior right fielder David Williams (Franklin, NJ), who made his return yesterday after missing 30 games due to a wrist injury, sprained his left ankle while sliding into second base in the second inning and was forced to leave the game prematurely.

Rutgers, which opened an eight-game homestand on Wednesday, will host BIG EAST foe St. John’s in a three-game series, beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex in Piscataway.
