PISCATAWAY, NJ - An uncharacteristic three errors cost Rutgers six runs in an 11-2 loss to St. John's Saturday in BIG EAST baseball action at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex.
The Scarlet Knights (19-20-1, 7-10 BIG EAST) lost back-to-back home games for the first time all season, dropping their record to 9-3-1 in home contests this season. Rutgers was victimized by 14 stranded base runners on Saturday, leading to the Scarlet Knights' two runs on 10 hits.
After pushing across a first-inning run to take the early lead, the Red Storm (28-13, 10-6 BIG EAST) followed three scoreless frames with three runs in the fifth inning. SJU loaded the bases with two outs aided by a pair of infield errors by the Scarlet Knights in the fifth. The errors proved costly as Chris Joachim drove in two runs on a single and Anthony Smith followed with an RBI single to give the Red Storm a 4-0 advantage.
Rutgers mounted a comeback in the sixth when the Scarlet Knights put their first two batters on base, on a Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) single and a Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) walk, and Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) drilled a ball off the right-field wall for a single, scoring Frazier. Meade then moved to second and scored on consecutive infield groundouts to make it 4-2.
It stayed that way until the eighth inning when St. John's blew the game open with seven runs in the frame. A pair of singles with one out in the seventh ended starter Sean Spicer's (Pearl River, NY) day. Tim Woodhull (Princeton Junction, NJ) came on in relief for the Scarlet Knights. After a surrendering a walk to his first batter to load the bases, lead off man Will Vogl delivered a grand slam over the right-field fence to push SJU's advantage to 8-2. The Red Storm put another runner on, against new pitcher Ryan Bradley (Overland Park, KS) and, with two outs, a third Rutgers error in the game extended the inning putting runners on first and second. After a balk advanced the runners, the Red Storm capitalized on the RU infield miscue when Anthony Smith's single plated two more runs as SJU built the 11-2 lead.
RU threatened in the bottom half of the eighth with runners on first and second with no outs, however, both runners were stranded as SJU reliever Luis Monell struck out three of the next four batters to end the inning.
The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases in the ninth, but SJU closer James Lally got a strikeout to end the game.
Spicer (5-3) took the loss, giving up three earned runs (six total), while striking out a pair of batters in 7.1 innings of work. RU's five pitchers combined to give up just five earned runs in the contest. SJU's Rob Delaney (4-3) picked up the win, striking out seven batters, while allowing two runs on six hits in five innings.
Hill, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, had three hits, while Frazier and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) each collected a pair of hits on the day.
Rutgers and St. John's will wrap up its three-game series Sunday at noon at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex in Piscataway.
