PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickson split a baseball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex. The Scarlet Knights (21-21-1) cruised to a 9-3 victory in the first game, before a late-inning rally lifted the Knights of FDU (9-32) to a 7-5 victory in game two.
Rutgers jumped on FDU early in the day’s opening contest, capitalizing on a pair of FDU fielding miscues to score eight runs in the first inning. With Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) (walk) on first and one out in the inning, Todd Frazier’s (Toms River, NJ) grounder to the second baseman was mishandled by the shortstop, while trying to get Bionde out at second. A pair of walks to Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) and Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) followed, scoring Bionde. FDU then committed a similar error on Vinny Sangemino’s (Nutley, NJ) fielder’s choice, with the second baseman mishandling the ball this time as each Scarlet Knight advanced and a second run scored. Consecutive singles by Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) and Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) plated three more runs. After a strikeout, the Scarlet Knights re-loaded the bases as Grose walked on his second plate appearance of the inning. A pair of singles by Bionde and Frazier then scored the final three runs of the inning to give the Scarlet Knights a commanding 8-0 lead.
With an eight-run cushion, Rutgers starter Matt Giannini (Watchung, NJ) worked four scoreless innings, before the Knights of FDU finally got around on the freshman hurler. FDU pushed one run across in the fifth inning before Jeff Vincent hit a two-out, two-run single to plate the final two runs and cut RU’s lead to 8-3.
The Scarlet Knights added a ninth run in the bottom-half of the fifth as Hook drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed over, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Grose’s second hit of the game.
Junior Mark Lampariello (Annandale, NJ) came on in relief of Giannini to start the sixth. Giannini (4-4) allowed three runs on nine hits with a career-high eight strikeouts in five innings to earn his fourth-straight win. He registered at least one strikeout in each inning, totaling seven strikeouts in the first four innings. Lampariello and freshman Tony Wargo (New Providence, NJ) worked a perfect sixth and seventh inning, respectively, in relief with Wargo punching out two of three batters he faced to complete RU’s seven-inning, game one victory.
FDU took its first lead of the day in the third inning of game two of the doubleheader, scoring a two-out run off of Rutgers starter Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ). The lead was short-lived, however, as the Scarlet Knights plated a pair of runs in the bottom-half of the frame to capture a 2-1 advantage. With two outs and Bionde on first base, Frazier drilled a ball to the gap in left-center field for a double and Bionde raced around to score. After Frazier stole third, Hill brought him home with a single to right field.
Two innings later, Rutgers built its lead to 4-1 with a two-run fifth inning. Catcher Jason Downey (Ballston Lake, NY) smacked a leadoff single to left field, was sacrificed over to second and raced around to score on a Grose double to the gap in left-center field. Two batters later, Frazier drove home his second run of the game with a single to right field.
RU capitalized on an FDU error in the sixth to plate a fifth run as DH Tom Edwards (West Caldwell, NJ) reached base on bad throw by the third baseman, moving over to second on the play, and scored on Downey’s double down the left-field on the next play.
Jansen worked into the eighth for RU, handing the ball over to reliever Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) with one out and one-run across and a runner on first in the inning. Bryan Greer greeted Lillis with an RBI double, moving over to third on an error, and later scoring as FDU pulled with a run of the Scarlet Knights.
Looking to add an insurance run, RU loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but could not plate a run.
Sophomore Tim Woodhull (Princeton Junction, NJ) came in for the Scarlet Knights in the ninth. After giving up a leadoff single, Woodhull got the next two batters out. Down to its final out, FDU scrapped together another single to put runners on first and second to set up the dramatic ending. Matt Maher provided the heroics for FDU, with a two-run single to right field, before sloppy play by the RU defense, resulted in a pair of errors, allowing Maher to come around to score to make, 7-5.
After holding Rutgers scoreless in the ninth, FDU, which scored six runs over the final two innings, secured the game two victory.
Hill ended his 13-game hitting streak in the first game, while Grose extended his streak to nine games. Grose had five hits on the day, extending his streak of games with multiple hits to six games.
Rutgers will wrap up its nine-game homestand with a three-game series against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh, beginning with a doubleheader against the Panthers on Saturday at noon at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex.
