NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion's Anthony Shawler pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout to end the Rutgers baseball team's four-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory over the Scarlet Knights in a brisk one hour and 50 minutes Sunday afternoon under intermittent rain at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights (4-2) win their series against the Monarchs (6-6) after taking the first two games on the weekend.
Shawler (2-0) won a pitcher's duel with Rutgers starter Steve Healing (Brick, N.J.). The ODU hurler struck out nine batters, while walking one in the contest. Healing (0-1) nearly equaled Shawler's performance as the senior allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in seven innings. Healing retired the first eight batters he faced in the game.
The decisive run came in the fourth inning when Healing hit ODU's Chris Keenan to put the leadoff hitter on base and a wild pitch moved Keenan over to second. The runner then slid under the tag to steal third base and move within 90 feet of home plate. With two outs, David Burns drove a ball to center field for a single to score Keenan to put ODU up.
Rutgers' best scoring opportunity came in the fifth when it got its first two runners aboard. The ODU catcher made a nice play to get the lead runner out at third during a failed sacrifice bunt attempt by Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, N.J.).
The Monarchs threatened to score another run in the fifth, moving a runner to third but Healing got Gerard Hall to go down on strikes to end the inning.
Burns extended the Monarch's lead to 2-0 with a leadoff home run over the right-field fence in the seventh. He was 2-for-3 on the day, driving in both of ODU's runs.
Sophomore Tom Edwards (Caldwell, N.J.) recorded the Scarlet Knights' lone hit, lining a ball to left field with two outs in the eighth inning.
Senior Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, N.J.) came in for Healing to start the eighth, working a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
Junior Todd Frazier (Toms River, N.J.) finished the day 0-for-4 from the plate, ending his hitting streak at 12 games, dating back to last season.
Rutgers returns south next weekend for a three-game series at No. 15 Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga.
