PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, N.J.) drove in three runs and All-American candidates Todd Frazier (Toms River, N.J.) and Dave Williams (Franklin, N.J.) each added a pair of RBI while Jon McCue (Hillside, N.J.) recorded another strong effort on the mound as Rutgers cruised past Fairleigh Dickinson, 11-2, Wednesday afternoon at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (26-16) pushed across a single run in first when senior Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, N.J.) doubled down the right-field line and scored on the next play with an RBI single from Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, N.J.). Sophomore Tom Edwards (Caldwell, N.J.) delivered RU's second run with his fifth home run of the season, clearing the wall in right-center field in the second.
Rutgers made it 6-0 with a four-run fourth inning. The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases and plated the first two runs of the inning without the luxury of a hit. Senior Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drove in the first run with an infield groundout and FDU reliever Anthony Champion re-loaded the bases with a walk before hitting Donny Callahan (Sparta, N.J.) to bring home a second score, ending his day. Frazier then greeted new pitcher Stephen Bush with a two-run single to left field.
FDU got its first run on an RBI double from pinch hitter Corey Jeffers in the sixth to cut the Scarlet Knights' lead to five.
In the seventh, Frazier led off with a single, stole second and moved over to third as Bionde laid down a perfect bunt for a single. Both runners later moved into scoring position when Bionde stole second. An opportunistic Williams drove both runners home with a hard shot back up the middle for a single. Following an Edwards walk, Gossard clobbered a ball over the left-field fence for a three-run home run to make it 11-1. The blast was Gossard's sixth of the season and second in as many games as the junior extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
FDU plated its second run of the game in the eighth on an RBI double from Vincente Medina, but McCue retired the next two batters to get out of the inning and handed the ball over to reliever Kevin Lillis (Fair Haven, N.J.) in the ninth.
McCue worked eight strong innings with six strikeouts while allowing two runs on six hits to improve to 5-0 on the season. Lillis struck out two in a scoreless ninth for RU.
Henessy (0-3), who was the first of seven FDU hurlers to see action on Wednesday, took the loss falling to 0-3 on the year.
Frazier collected three hits on the day to tie David DeJesus (1998-2000), the current starting outfielder for the Kansas City Royals, for eighth place on the Rutgers all-time hits list with his 211th career hit. Frazier also tied his older brother Jeff on the all-time total bases chart with 370 in his career.
Rutgers returns to action tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. game against Lafayette at Bainton Field in Piscataway.
