MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (March 16, 2010) - Junior OF/DH Pat Biserta (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) was named the Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the group announced on Tuesday.
Biserta, who was named the BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, guided Rutgers (5-8) to a perfect 4-0 week with a midweek home win over NJIT and a three-game sweep of Florida International in Miami.
"Pat had a tremendous week and is very deserving of this honor," said Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill. "He has had a very good start to the season and has been a major contributor near the top of our lineup. His run production was crucial in our series sweep of FIU over the weekend. We are happy for Pat."
The Scarlet Knight earned the nation's top hitting honor after a week where he hit .550 (11-for-20) with three home runs, three doubles and a triple to drive in 13 runs and score nine. In the three-game sweep of FIU, Biserta hit .529 (9-for-17) with nine hits, including three home runs and three doubles. All 13 of his RBI and seven of his nine runs scored on the week came in the three -game series against the Golden Panthers.
In Sunday's series finale at FIU, he hit a grand slam to give Rutgers the lead late in the contest. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Scarlet Knight completed a 5-for-7 day from the plate with three doubles and a home run to drive in six runs and score four in the contest. He had a home run in all three games of the FIU series and multiple hits in all four games last week.
The junior recorded 25 total bases and reached base in 16 of 23 plate appearances last week. He led a Rutgers offense that scored 56 runs in its four games last week.
Biserta leads the Scarlet Knights with a .382 batting average and six home runs for the season.

Rutgers will be back in action tonight for the first of two games against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. RU will play FAU at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
