Biserta, Nyisztor Earn All-BIG EAST Baseball Honors

CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 25, 2010) – Rutgers junior left fielder Pat Biserta (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) and freshman second baseman Steve Nyisztor (Toms River, N.J.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Baseball Team as announced by the league at the opening ceremonies for the 2010 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Tuesday evening at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. Biserta was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection, while Nyisztor was a Second Team All-BIG EAST pick.
“We are proud of the accomplishments of both Pat and Steve as both are very deserving of a spot on the league’s top teams,” said Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill. “They have both contributed in a big way to our success this season.”
Biserta hit .369 with 15 doubles and 18 home runs, driving in 55 runs for the Scarlet Knights during the regular season. He ranked fourth in the conference and was among the national leaders in home runs. The junior also ranked among the league leaders in hitting, slugging percentage, RBI and total bases. He walked a team-high 25 times during the regular season. The left fielder posted a pair of outfield assists and committed just two errors in 97 chances on the year. Biserta started all 52 contests as either the Scarlet Knights’ left fielder or designated hitter.
In his first season of competition, Nyisztor played in all 52 games with 51 starts at second base. The true freshman led the BIG EAST with a .434 batting average in league games. He ranked fourth overall in the league in hitting and first among freshmen with a .400 batting average. Nyisztor collected 22 extra-base hits, including 17 doubles and three home runs. The first-year Scarlet Knight owned a 26-game hitting streak during the regular season and has hit safely in 32 of his last 34 contests. He also stole nine bases on the year. The middle infielder was excellent defensively with just three errors in 251 chances at second base.
The sixth-seeded Scarlet Knights (28-24, 15-12) will face the third-seeded Panthers of Pittsburgh (37-16, 18-8) Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the opening game of the 2010 BIG EAST Baseball Championship at Bright House Field.
