"I think it is really important to scrimmage in the fall," head coach Joe Litterio said. "It gets the new kids—the freshmen, the transfers—to see how we play here…the level, the speed. It also finds out who worked over the summer, who got better. So you find out who comes back ready to play, and who wants the starting spot. Being able to play all these games this time of the year, it's almost we're getting ready to start the season down south. I want to see all the pieces in the right place."
Under the watch of Litterio, the program has split into two teams - Scarlet and Knights. Assistant coaches Tim Reilly and Casey Gaynor will each manage a squad in hopes of capturing the fall title.
"We have been really stressing the basic fundamentals throughout the fall - that's what we've always done here," Litterio said. "Offensively, I think we emphasize mostly about scoring runners from third base and about being aggressive on the bases. That's the kind of stuff that we're looking to continue to do from last year. I think we're a very aggressive team, especially running the bases, and I want to continue to make sure we do that. Pitching wise, I think we can improve on what we did last year. We had a good season, in terms of what the young kids did, but we were young. This year we're a year older and we have more experience and I would like to see improvement. We've also added some depth in the pen, which you need to get through a season."
All World Series games are open to the public. Check ScarletKnights.com for updates throughout the series.
