PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 9, 2014) - Rutgers baseball fell behind early and could not recover in a 13-2 defeat to Columbia Wednesday at Bainton Field. It was the seventh game in nine days for the Scarlet Knights.

The Lions jumped up 4-0 after three innings and extended their lead to 10-0 with six runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Four different Columbia hitters collected two hits in the attack.

Rutgers scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning when junior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) singled to lead off and moved up to second on a throwing error. Two outs later, he stole third and came all the way around to home on a wild pitch on the same play.

The Scarlet Knights also plated a run in the seventh inning. Sophomore John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) doubled and scored on a line-drive single to right-center by freshman Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.). It marked the first career run batted in for Folinusz.

On the mound, senior Charlie Lasky (Freehold, N.J.) pitched a season-long three innings in relief, giving up no runs and one hit. Sophomore Reed Shuttle (Lansdale, Pa.) (1-1) took the loss in his second start of the year, while Thomas Crispi (2-1) picked up the win for the Lions.

Rutgers will remain at home this weekend, starting a series with Hartford at Bainton Field Friday at 3 p.m.
