Scarlet Even Series
Oct 16 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Scarlet bounced back to claim a 3-1 victory in game two of the Rutgers Fall World Series behind effective pitching and timely hitting. The best-of-five set is now tied at one.
Freshman Luke Bowerbank (Bernardsville, N.J.) earned game MVP honors by going 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs from the leadoff spot in the order. On the mound, redshirt junior Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) claimed the win by tossing three shutout innings, with junior Colin Bohnert (West Caldwell, N.J.) following up with three more scoreless frames for the hold. Redshirt freshman Jordan Matthews (Teaneck, N.J.) notched the save.
Wanting to avoid an 0-2 hole in the series, the Scarlet jumped on the board first with a run in the second inning. Junior Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) hit a leadoff single up the middle and came all the way around to score one batter later when fifth-year senior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) lined an RBI double to the right field corner.
A pair of insurance runs were tacked on in the fifth. Sophomore Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) was struck by a pitch to start and moved to third on a double by redshirt freshman Anthony Santoro (Manalapan, N.J.). The two runners held there following a short pop fly and strikeout, but Bowerbank delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0.
The Knights threatened in the last inning when junior Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) scored, but Matthews quelled the rally to seal the victory.
Freshman Dante Scafidi (Washington Township, N.J.) struck out three over three innings for the Knights.
Game three of the series is Monday at 9 a.m. at Bainton Field.
