PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Locked in another pitcher's duel, Rutgers baseball was edged 2-0 by Manhattan in Tuesday action at Bainton Field. It was the ninth game in the past 12 days for the Scarlet Knights.
Sophomore Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) (1-1) allowed just four hits and one run over six innings, but suffered a hard-luck loss. The right-hander did not walk or hit a batter and struck out three in the 66-pitch outing. Sophomore Colin Bohnert (West Caldwell, N.J.) followed by striking out the side in the seventh, while senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) struck out two of his four outs recorded.
Left-hander Tom Cosgrove (1-2) earned his first win of the season for Manhattan (7-16) with seven shutout innings on the mound. Shawn Kanwisher tossed a scoreless eighth inning and Joe Jacques worked the ninth for his first save.
After each side went down scoreless in the first three innings, Jasper centerfielder Evan Brown broke the tie with a solo home run with two outs in the fourth. It was his second of the season.
Sophomore Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) led off the fifth with his first career triple to right-center for the Scarlet Knights, but was left on after Manhattan fielded two grounders with the infield up and induced a flyout.
The game continued to stay at 1-0 in favor of the visitors until the eighth when Joe McClennan connected for the third consecutive Manhattan single with two outs to double the advantage.
Sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) collected a leadoff pinch-hit single in the eighth and junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) earned a one-out walk in the ninth, but nothing more materialized for Rutgers' offense. RU left four runners on base for the day.
The Scarlet Knights (8-17) will continue their 10-game homestand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game versus Monmouth. The contest will be broadcast on WRSU.
