BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) settled in to pitch seven innings, but Rutgers baseball suffered a 6-0 defeat to Indiana Saturday at Bart Kaufman Field. It was the second game of the three-game Big Ten set.
After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Brey (1-5) worked five consecutive scoreless frames to keep the Scarlet Knights (11-22, 5-6) within striking distance. The left-hander struck out seven in the outing and has worked at least seven innings in three of his four conference starts this season.
However, the bullpen surrendered three run in the eighth to put RU in a six-run hole.
At the plate, senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) reached base three times with two walks and a single, while junior Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) and junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) both walked and singled. Rutgers stranded five runners in the game.
Jake Kelzer (3-1) picked up the win for Indiana with eight shutout innings for the Hoosiers (20-11, 4-6), allowing three hits and four walks. He recorded six strikeouts. Indiana picked up 13 hit on the day offensively.
The contest was attended by 3,328 spectators; the most Rutgers has played in front of in a road game since 3,495 watched the March 19, 2011 game at East Carolina.
The RU-IU series finale is set for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. from Bart Kaufman Field. Sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) will make the start on the mound for Rutgers.
