Baseball Ties at Lafayette

April 14, 2015

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. -- Rutgers baseball played to a 3-3 tie over 12 innings on the road against Lafayette Tuesday at Kamine Stadium. The game was called before a result due to darkness.

It was the first extra-inning contest of the season for the Scarlet Knights and the first tie since April 15, 2008 at home versus Fordham.

Three RU pitchers out of the bullpen combined to allow just one run over seven innings to keep the game intact. Sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) entered first and allowed a run over two innings, with senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) following with three scoreless frames. The right-hander left four on base and moved the game to extras. Sophomore Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) retired all six batters (four strikeouts) faced in the 11th and 12th, including striking out the side to end the game.

Freshman John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) took a no-decision in his fifth start of the season. He permitted two runs and eight hits, but walked just one over five innings.

Offensively, sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) hit a home run and a single, as senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) collected a double and a single. Freshmen Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) and Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) added RBIs.

Rutgers (11-23-1) was not charged with an error for the 13th game this season.

Marcinczyk gave RU the early lead in first by blasting a 3-0 pitch over the wall in right. It was his team-leading fifth long ball of the year and marked the ninth time the team scored in the opening inning.

The Leopards (7-18-1) put up runs on two-out RBI hits in both the second and fifth innings to take the lead. However, O'Reilly was able to minimize the damage by stranding two on in the fifth to end his day.

Lafayette would not stay ahead for long, as the Scarlet Knights manufactured a run in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) hit his ninth double of the season on a 1-2 offering to start and immediately advanced on a deep fly to right by Walker. Then with the infield back, Freeman grounded a ball to shortstop for the tying RBI.

After the hosts claimed a 3-2 lead in the seventh, Rutgers answered with one of its own in the eighth. Zarrillo battled to a full count before singling through the right side. He then stole second and ran to third on a productive groundout by Campbell. Next up, Walker lined an RBI single to right-center to knot the game at three.

Young left runners on base in each of his three innings of work, with Fleming taking over in the 11th. The left-hander sat down the last four batters he faced on strikes.

At that point, the umpires ruled it too dark outside to continue.

For Lafayette, the home team collected 13 hits and used eight different pitchers on the mound.

After playing five consecutive road games, Rutgers returns to Bainton Field Wednesday to host Columbia, the two-time defending Ivy League champions. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast by WRSU 88.7 FM.
