O'Reilly Pitches Baseball to Win

April 21, 2015

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Behind seven shutout innings on the mound from freshman John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.), Rutgers baseball cruised past Wagner, 7-1, in Tuesday action at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights scored four runs in the fifth inning to break open the game.

Making his sixth start of the season, O'Reilly (4-1) continued his dominance of Wagner by scattering six hits and one walk on the day. The right-hander struck out five hitters overall and sat down the first nine batters faced, as he has permitted just one run over 14 innings in two starts versus the Seahawks. O'Reilly now has a team-best four wins and a 2.66 ERA in his rookie season.

Offensively, six different players recorded a hit for the Scarlet Knights. Freshmen Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) and Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) each had RBIs in the fifth inning, while junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) previously drove in a run. In addition, sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) filled the box score with a hit, RBI and a walk in the game.

After each side went down scoreless in the first, RU (13-26-1) took advantage of an error to break through in the second. Sophomore Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) walked with one out and ended up advancing to second. With two down, Folinusz raced home on an infield pop hit by sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) that was dropped. Campbell then stole second and scored on an RBI single from Jennings.

Rutgers tacked on an unearned score in the third. Junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) reached on error and advanced up on a wild pitch. Following a walk drawn by sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.), Walker laid down a sacrifice bunt to move two into scoring position. Suseck ended up coming home on another wild pitch.

With O'Reilly continuing to toss zeroes on the board, the Scarlet Knights added four more in the fifth. Suseck and Marcinczyk both walked on four pitches to start the inning, with Walker then working the count to 3-0. The cleanup hitter had the green light and blasted a pitch that one-hopped over the centerfield wall for an RBI ground-rule double. Freeman followed with a two-run double to the left-center gap to make it 6-0. After an advancing groundout by Folinusz, Carter capped the rally with an RBI single through the left side.

Sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) wrapped up the game by striking out three over the final two frames.

For Wagner (16-15-1), starter Austin Goeke (1-2) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Four different relievers entered from the bullpen. At the plate, Kyle Cala had an RBI single in the ninth for the visitors.

Rutgers will conclude a stretch of six consecutive home games with a Wednesday contest versus Saint Peter's. First pitch from Bainton Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
