PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In the midst of a breakthrough campaign, former Rutgers baseball standout Todd Frazier has been voted the starter at third base for the National League in the MLB All-Star Game. The 86th annual Midsummer Classic will be held at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati - Frazier's home stadium - on Tuesday, July 14 at 8:15 p.m. (FOX). This marks the second all-star selection for Frazier, who earned the nod as a reserve in 2014.
Now in his fifth season with the Reds, Frazier leads the big leagues with 50 extra-base hits, while tying for second overall with 25 home runs. He is also in the top-10 statistically with 24 doubles (tied fourth), a .946 OPS (seventh) and 54 runs (tied eighth). The third baseman has played in 79 games through July 5, earning 9,233,686 fan votes to garner the starting assignment for the Senior Circuit.
Frazier will also take part in the Home Run Derby set for Monday at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
Frazier and Eric Young (1996) are the two players to represent Rutgers in the MLB All-Star Game. Last season, Frazier drew a walk in his plate appearance after entering the game at third base in the sixth inning. He finished as runner-up in the derby the night prior.
One of the most accomplished players in program history, Frazier ranks first in the RU record book with 42 career home runs and 210 runs during his three seasons (2005-07) in Piscataway. He hit .377 with 93 hits, 24 doubles, 22 home runs, 65 RBIs, 62 walks and 25 stolen bases in a memorable All-America 2007 season that saw the Scarlet Knights win the Big East regular season and tournament. Frazier batted .520 (13-for-25) with three homers and seven RBIs in the tournament held in Brooklyn to help lead Rutgers to an NCAA Regional berth.
Frazier was picked by Cincinnati with the 34th overall selection in the 2007 draft and made his MLB debut May 23, 2011.
