Alyssa Bull Named Second Team All-Big Ten
Nov 02 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers redshirt senior Alyssa Bull was recognized by the conference Wednesday as she was named Second Team All-Big Ten. Senior back Devon Freshnock was also recognized as the team's sportsmanship honoree.
"Alyssa has been an integral part of this team for five years and has been a leader from day one," head coach Meredith Civico said. "I am so proud of all that she has accomplished as a Scarlet Knight. She has grown as a person and player each year and has been a driving force behind the progression of the Rutgers field hockey program. I am excited to see her and her fellow seniors lead this team into the Big Ten Tournament."
Bull, a three-time team captain, has started all 17 games this season with three goals and six assists for 12 points this season. The midfielder scored goals against Big Ten foes Indiana and Northwestern, and also tallied the game-winning goal to give Rutgers a 1-0 overtime victory against Saint Joseph's. For her career, she has started 72 games and scored 14 goals with 20 assists for 48 points. The 20 assists are seventh all-time in Rutgers history.
An Oakville, Ontario, native, Bull was previously a three-time Big Ten Player to Watch. She was also the 2012 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.
The athletes chosen for the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, in addition to demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Freshnock, who joins Bull as a team captain, has started 17 games this season with six goals and five assists for 17 points. In 70 career games, the Middletown, New Jersey native has 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points.
"I can think of no player more deserving of this recognition," Civico said. "Devon has been a key player for the Scarlet Knights defense for four years. She has provided exceptional leadership on and off the field this season. She's a player who always leads by example and sets the standard. I am incredibly proud of her for receiving this recognition."
