PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In April, 2014, the Rutgers baseball program started a relationship with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. The Vs. Cancer Foundation is a not for profit organization whose sole mission is to raise money for pediatric cancer research. This organization was founded by college athletes and uses college sports, particularly baseball, to help raise money to save kid's lives.
The Rutgers baseball program, along with St. Peter's University Children's Hospital, will be raising money throughout the year for children's cancer research. Every dollar raised will go directly to support and to find a cure for this terrible disease. Half of the money will go to the Vs. Cancer Foundation to fund research for better medicines and treatments. The other half will go to St. Peter's University Children's Hospital in New Brunswick. The team will be making visits to the hospital to meet with the children who are currently receiving treatments. In addition, the program will cap off the fundraiser with a Vs. Cancer Day at Bainton Field on Sunday, April 30, when the Scarlet Knights host Michigan. The game is at 1 p.m. and all are invited to come out to watch the team shave their heads to raise awareness and dollars for children's cancer research.
"I want to thank Chase Jones and Brant Masters for being so instrumental in helping our team get this fundraiser going," head coach Joe Litterio said. "They have done a great job as our link to the Vs. Cancer Foundation and getting our kids setup to start raising money. Every year we have a different player, or players, take the lead as the point man for this project. While it is sincerely a team effort, Colin Bohnert, one of our senior pitchers, is heading up this fundraiser and really rallying the troops to get involved.
The Vs. Cancer Foundation is doing a great thing by involving college baseball players to raise money for such a worthy cause. As much as this is about the kids, our players get to learn that it's not always about you. So much of our day is focused on improving ourselves to be better athletes, students and people. Service to your community, making life better for someone else is really what our guys get to experience. I am so thankful for this opportunity to help find a cure for pediatric cancer and provide our team with an experience that will last a lifetime."
