PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers baseball fell behind early and could not catch up in an 8-4 setback against Nebraska Saturday at Bainton Field. It was the second game of a doubleheader, as the Cornhuskers claimed the series victory.
The loss moved RU to 22-22 on the season and 6-9 in the Big Ten. NU improved to 28-16 and 9-6.
Juniors Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) and Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) each had two hits to lead the Scarlet Knights at the plate, with Campbell driving home three on a double. The offense also drew six walks to raise the season total to 196, tops in the Big Ten.
Freshman Serafino Brito (Oakland, N.J.) (5-3) made his first career conference start, but took the loss with four runs allowed in three innings. The trio of junior Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.), redshirt junior Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) and freshman Kevin Romero (Garfield, N.J.) all worked two frames of relief each.
For Nebraska, Jake Meyers (3-1) earned the win with six shutout innings, not allowing a hit until the sixth. The visitors collected 15 hits and connected for two home runs offensively.
The scoring started in the top of the first when the Cornhuskers plated three on four hits to begin the game. Additional runs were added in the third, fifth, sixth and ninth to make it 8-0.
Rutgers put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth to cut into the deficit. Freshman Luke Bowerbank (Bernardsville, N.J.) picked up his fourth hit of the series with two outs and moved up when classmate Kevin Blum (Toms River, N.J.) lined a single up the middle for his first career hit. Freshman Tyler McNamara (East Brunswick, N.J.) then walked to load the bases for Campbell, who drilled a bases-clearing double to right-center. Marcinczyk followed that up with an RBI single to left-center. However, NU recorded the final out on the ground to end the threat.
The Scarlet Knights will wrap up an eight-game homestand Tuesday at 1 p.m. against St. Peter's.
