Five RU programs post perfect GSR scores of 100
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 8, 2017) – Five Rutgers University Athletics programs produced perfect scores of 100, while 16 out of 20 teams earned marks above 80 percent in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report, released today by the NCAA for all Division I institutions. Rutgers Athletics posted an overall score of 85, its ninth consecutive year with a score of 84 or above.
"Our responsibility is to provide every student-athlete who chooses Rutgers with the support they need to achieve their most important goal – earning a college degree," said Director of Athletics Patrick Hobbs. "That will always be our number one priority."
Each year, the NCAA publicly announces the GSR of all Division I institutions. This year's numbers reflect an average for students who entered college from 2007-10. The graduation-rate data is based on a six-year cohort prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education. The NCAA developed the Division I GSR in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among all college students today.
Rutgers women's basketball, gymnastics, swimming and diving, women's lacrosse and field hockey all achieved a perfect GSR of 100. Gymnastics has earned a perfect score in every GSR report thus far, marking 13 consecutive years.
Nineteen Rutgers programs had GSR scores above the federal rate within their sports, and eight of 12 women's teams registered scores of 90 or above.
Football earned a score of 82 for the second straight year, ranking sixth among Big Ten programs and coming in 24 points above the federal rate for football teams.
Men's lacrosse scored a GSR of 87, the highest mark among Rutgers men's programs and seven points above the federal rate in the sport. Men's basketball posted a GSR of 80. The score ranked seventh among Big Ten Conference men's hoops programs and is 60 points ahead of the national average.
Women's basketball's earned a perfect score for the first time since the data has been tabulated. Their score of 100 improved from 90 one year ago, and comes in 45 points above the sport's federal rate. Women's lacrosse extends its perfect score streak to three straight years, field hockey now has two consecutive perfect scores, while swimming and diving received its first-ever score of 100.
The GSR begins with the federal cohort, and adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees, and non-scholarship students (in specified cases) to the sample. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the cohort of their initial institution. This rate provides a more complete and accurate look at actual student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in Division I athletics and tracking their academic outcomes.
