Baseball Drops Finale at No. 13 Virginia

Feb. 26, 2017

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Rutgers baseball hit a pair of home runs in an 18-2 loss in the finale of its series at No. 13 Virginia Sunday at Davenport Field. It was the sixth consecutive game for the Scarlet Knights against a top-20 opponent to open the season.

Sophomores Nick Matera and Jawuan Harris both blasted long balls to give RU (1-5) six home runs through six games, the most by the team through that many games since 2007. For Harris, he now has three homers to become the first Scarlet Knight to hit three homers in the first two weekends since Pat Biserta in 2010.

Making just his second collegiate start, sophomore James Torres (0-1) allowed just three hits a five-plus inning outing. The right-hander struck out three with five walks and five runs permitted. Senior Gaby Rosa made his first appearance on the mound since 2015 with a perfect inning of relief.

Virginia (7-0) took the early lead with a pair of runs in the first, but Matera hit a solo shot over the left-field bleachers in the second to chip into the deficit. Harris would follow with a blast to the seats in left-center in the third inning to tie the game at two.

Ernie Clement connected for a long ball in the bottom of the third and Robbie Coman struck for a two-run shot in the sixth to put the Cavaliers up, 5-2. Six more runs would come across in the sixth, with four being unearned, with seven more plating in the seventh to open up the game.

Clement and Coman would each finish with four RBIs at the plate, while Adam Haseley (1-0) earned the win by striking out six over seven innings for UVA. This weekend marked the first meetings between the teams since 1962.

The last time RU opened with six games against ranked opponents was 2009.

The Scarlet Knights are next scheduled for their first home game Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Wagner. Rutgers went 16-6 at Bainton Field last season.
