Baseball Tops Wagner, 9-2

Piscataway, N.J. - Rutgers (2-5) baseball defeated Wagner (1-3), 9-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Bainton Field behind an all-around performance from senior Christian Campbell, who drove in a pair of runs and picked up the win on the mound.

Campbell pitched seven innings, allowing two runs with four strikeouts. He retired the side in five of his seven innings. At the plate, Campbell went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Jawuan Harris went 2-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Luke Bowerbank was 1-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs batted in and a run scored.

Wagner got out to a one-run lead in the second inning on a leadoff single by Anthony Pecora, who then scored following a balk and an RBI single from Nick D'Amore.

A four-run third inning gave the Scarlet Knights their lead for good as Nick Matera got the rally started with a leadoff double to left field. Carmen Sclafani worked a walk and Matera advanced to third on a passed ball. A pickoff attempt at first base went wide, allowing Matera to score from third. Sclafani scored on the next play on an RBI single from Bowerbank. Harris followed with a double, moving Bowerbank to third and the pair later scored on a two-run single up the middle from Campbell.

Rutgers tacked on a run in the fourth to pull ahead 5-1. Kevin Welsh tripled to start the inning and scored on a double play ball. Two runs in the fifth gave the Scarlet Knights a 7-1 lead. Harris hit a triple to center field to begin the inning for RU and came home on a single up the middle by Mike Carter. Carter advanced to second on the next batter and scored on an RBI single through the left side by Milo Freeman.

Wagner scored a run in the seventh to make it 7-2, however, the Scarlet Knights closed out the game with two runs in the eighth to win, 9-2. Welsh walked and Matera was hit by a pitch to get on base. The pair stole a base to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch plated Welsh and Bowerbank drove in Matera on a sac fly to right field.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Friday, March 3 for a three-game series at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
