PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers baseball took its first home loss of the season with a 7-2 setback to Rider Tuesday at Bainton Field. It was the 67th all-time meeting between the two New Jersey programs.
Sophomore Jawuan Harris reached base in his first four trips on two singles and two walks and added three stolen bases. The outfielder now has 50 career swipes in 67 games, tied with former major leaguer David DeJesus (1998-2000) for 10th in school history.
Senior Mike Carter contributed two singles for his ninth multiple-hit game, and also walked and took two bases of his own. Classmate Tom Marcinczyk walked twice and hit an RBI double, while freshman Kevin Welsh drew a ball four and singled from the nine spot in the order.
On the mound, senior Christian Campbell (2-1) made the start and allowed four earned runs over 5.2 innings, striking out three. Freshman Joe Neglia was effective out of the bullpen by retiring the side in order on just seven pitches in the ninth.
The Scarlet Knights (6-14) scored first with one run in the first inning. Carter singled with one out and then stole second with two down. Next up, Marcinczyk came through with an RBI double to left-center to put RU ahead.
However, the Broncs (7-10) plated runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh to tally six unanswered and take a 6-1 lead.
RU plated one in the seventh when Harris and Carter both singled, with Harris stealing third. Junior Chris Folinusz entered as a pinch hitter and lifted a sacrifice fly. Rider did get that run back in the next inning on a Mike Volaski home run.
The Rider bullpen would work 2.2 scoreless innings to secure the win for John Yocum (1-2), who permitted two runs in a 6.1-inning start that included 115 pitches. Jake Bender led all players in the game with three RBIs.
Rutgers will head back on the road this weekend to play a three-game series starting Friday at USC Upstate.
