PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Maryland broke open a 1-1 game in the seventh inning with a pair of runs and held on to defeat Rutgers baseball, 6-1, in the first game of the Sunday doubleheader at Bainton Field. It was part of the Scarlet Knights' first Big Ten series of the season.
Junior John O'Reilly (1-5) pitched a career-high 7.1 innings in a tough-luck defeat, striking out six with one walk. He allowed three earned runs and none in the first seven frames of work. Freshman Kyle Gerace retired all four faced out of the bullpen with a pair of strikeouts.
Sophomore Jawuan Harris had two of RU's (10-16, 0-2) eight hits at the plate, now having nine multiple-hit games this season. Senior Christian Campbell also reached base twice on a single and a walk, while sophomore Carmen Sclafani doubled, was hit by a pitch and walked.
Maryland (17-8, 4-1) struck first with a run on a passed ball in the second, but Rutgers tied it up in the third. Sclafani led off with a double to left-center and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kevin Welsh. Harris came up next and drilled an RBI single through the left side.
O'Reilly kept it tied in the fourth after the first two reached, striking out the side. That would start a stretch of 10 retired in a row for the right-hander.
The Scarlet Knights threatened to take the lead in the fifth inning after Harris and senior Mike Carter both singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. However, Tayler Stiles (2-1) entered from the bullpen and did not allow a run. The left-hander would pitch four shutout innings for the win.
The Terrapins broke the tie in the seventh. After a one-out double, Madison Nickens laid down a bunt single and it was errantly thrown to allow the go-ahead run to score. A squeeze play added another run. Maryland took advantage of a foul pop lost in the sun to add three more in the eighth.
In the ninth, the Scarlet Knights loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the game.
The series finale followed from Bainton Field.
