EVANSTON, Ill. - Rutgers baseball was eliminated from a shot at playing in the Big Ten playoffs with a 14-0 road loss to Northwestern Thursday at Miller Park. The Scarlet Knights have now traveled to all 12 opposing Big Ten parks since joining the conference.

After each side went down scoreless in the first, Northwestern (22-28, 11-11) took the lead with four runs on three hits and three hit batters in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Milo Freeman doubled and senior Mike Carter was hit by a pitch in the third, but both were left on base.

Fifth-year senior Max Herrmann kept Rutgers (19-32, 7-14) within striking distance with two perfect innings. The Wildcats then added four in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh to open up an insurmountable 14-0 lead.

Cooper Wetherbee (3-3) earned the win for the home team with nine strikeouts over seven shutout innings, scattering three hits. Northwestern totaled 13 hits, including a solo homer by Jack Claeys in the second inning. Senior Christian Campbell (2-4) took the loss, as freshman Kyle Muller closed out the last two innings without permitting an earned run.

The series will conclude with a doubleheader starting at noon ET on Friday. It will be the third twin bill in the last eight days for the Scarlet Knights.
