Four-year starter for the Scarlet Knights signs professional contract
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Tom Marcinczyk, a four-year starter for Rutgers baseball, has signed a professional contract with the Somerset Patriots, the organization announced Saturday. The outfielder will join the Atlantic League team immediately and is active for tonight's game.
"I want to thank coach Joe Litterio, my high school coach Mike O'Donnell and coach Duke Baxter and Travis Anderson for getting in touch with the Patriots," Marcinczyk said. "It is awesome to continue my baseball career with a great organization like the Somerset Patriots. Brett Jodie and Jon Hunton gave me the chance to come out and practice with the team and I am very grateful for this opportunity."
Playing in 207 career games for the Scarlet Knights with 203 starts, Marcinczyk finished his collegiate career ranked tied for third in school history with 13 triples, sixth with 735 at bats, seventh with 113 walks and ninth with 333 total bases. He put up a .283/.383/.453 slash line with 19 home runs, 126 RBIs, 123 runs and 30 stolen bases. In addition, the Middlesex, New Jersey, native is one of 17 players in school history to reach 200 career hits after collecting 208.
Marcinczyk became the first Scarlet Knight to earn All-Big Ten status in 2015 by finishing seventh in the conference in slugging percentage (.507), 15th in on base percentage (.404) and tied 10th in home runs (7) that campaign, while being tied for sixth in the league games only in runs (22), 13th in slugging percentage (.539), tied for seventh in walks (13) and 14th in on-base percentage (.427). As a senior in 2017, he totaled 10 doubles, seven home runs and three triples for a .473 slugging percentage. Marcinczyk also led the team this past season with 37 walks and a .400 on-base percentage, including a .436 mark in conference play to rank fifth in the league.
The criminal justice major garnered Academic All-Big Ten status in each of the past two years.
The Somerset Patriots, who play in nearby TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey, won the first half of the Liberty Division and are 49-35 overall. Marcinczyk will join fellow Rutgers baseball alumnus Nate Roe in the Atlantic League. Roe pitches for the New Britain Bees and was named to the all-star team this season.
