DiGeorgio Named to All-Big Ten Freshman Team

Walker earns Big Ten Sportsmanship Award
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Dan DiGeorgio represents Rutgers baseball on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in a vote of the league's head coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday. In addition, senior Kyle Walker earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in the postseason release.
DiGeorgio led all freshmen in the Big Ten with 17 stolen bases, a mark that was 10th among freshmen nationally and in the league overall. He paced the Scarlet Knights by scoring 39 runs, playing in all 50 games and hitting first or second in the order 35 times. Also being second on the team at 52 hits, DiGeorgio recorded a 14-game hitting streak that was the longest by a rookie in the program since 2010.
Defensively, DiGeorgio started the season at second base before flipping over to shortstop in game 22. He was instrumental in Rutgers leading the Big Ten with 50 double plays on the season, the most since 2010, with the average of one per game ranking No. 12 in the country.
This honor comes after DiGeorgio spent the 2016-17 academic year as a general student in the civil engineering program. An accomplished high school player at Tottenville, the Staten Island native tried out for the team in the fall and eventually worked to becoming a starter. He went 4-for-9 in his debut series at then-No. 9 Miami with three runs scored.
DiGeorgio is the second Rutgers representative on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, joining Jawuan Harris in 2016.
Walker is Rutgers' recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for distinguishing himself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, in addition to demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. He led RU with a .407 on-base percentage, drawing 23 walks and collecting 32 hits. In his final game against then-No. 11 Minnesota, Walker took the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Patrick Fredrickson deep for a two-run homer. He earned his degree as a finance major and has accepted a job as an analyst at Bloomberg, previously earning status as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar twice for a GPA over 3.7.
The Scarlet Knights finished the season with 25 wins, an improvement of six more victories than last year.
