ABOUT THE GAME: Rutgers heads to the road for the first time in the 2019 season, travelling to face St. John's. A 1 p.m. start, the game will be live streamed through ESPN3, with Ralph Bednarczyk on play-by-play.
ABOUT RUTGERS: The Scarlet Knights opened the season last Saturday with a 14-8 win over Lafayette in the earliest game in program history. Rutgers earned two Big Ten player of the week accolades from performances in that contest.
Connor Harryman (22-of-25 on faceoffs, 14 ground balls) was named Big Ten Co-Specialist of the Week.
Kyle Pless (three ground balls, two caused turnovers) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
Adam Charalambides made his return to the lineup after missing the last two seasons with injuries and scored four goals and added an assist. Fellow attackman
Kieran Mullins had three goals and two assists. Rutgers had three freshmen make their first career start:
Ben Pounds (goalkeeper, eight saves),
David Sprock (midfield, one goal and one assist) and
Jack Stahanczyk (defense). The Scarlet Knights lead the nation in face-off winning percentage (88.5 percent) and are third in the nation in ground balls (44). Charalambides shares the nation's lead in goals-per-game, while Harryman leads the nation in ground balls.
ABOUT ST. JOHN'S: The Red Storm are playing in their first game of the season. Last season, the team posted a 6-8 record. Returning is Joe Madsen, a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection who led the team wit h 31 goals and was second with 40 points. The team will have to replace graduated starters at goalkeeper and the face-off spot.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Rutgers holds a 20-7 advantage in the all-time series. The Scarlet Knights have won the last five contests dating back to 2014, as every player on the current Rutgers roster is undefeated in their careers against the Red Storm. The combined margin in those five games is 73-48. Among current players,
Casey Rose had a hat trick to lead RU to a 12-8 victory last season,
Kieran Mullins has had consecutive multi-goal games, and
Adam Charalambides had six goals in his first career game in 2016.
Max Edelmann holds a .509 save percentage and 9.00 goals-against-average in three starts vs. St. John's.
Rutgers head coach
Brian Brecht and St. John's head coach Jason Miller are both graduates of Springfield College, and were teammates on the lacrosse field, with Brecht graduating in 1993 and Miller in 1995.
