Baseball Edged by Indiana State

Genuario pitches a career-high 5.2 innings of relief

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Rutgers baseball (5-15) surrendered three runs in the top of the first and Indiana State (19-2) added an insurance score in the eighth to post a 4-3 win in the series finale Sunday at City of Palms Park. All three contests in the set were decided by one or two runs.

"Indiana State is a senior-dominated team and they play that way, a team that should be in the national polls," head coach Joe Litterio said. "We were right there with them each game this weekend. We gave up six in the first inning yesterday, three today and were able to make them one-run games towards the end. Progress is being made. I know our record is not where we want it to be, but our young guys are gaining valuable experience. Going into conference play next weekend, hopefully the ball starts bouncing our way a little bit and were get some breaks here or there. I'm confident with the guys we have and the direction the team is trending. That's the positive thing about it."

Junior Tommy Genuario pitched a career-high 5.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Scarlet Knights in the game. He struck out three in the outing from the second inning through the seventh. Senior Serafino Brito was charged with one run in two innings.

Senior Carmen Sclafani, who went 2-for-4, blasted his second homer of the season in the ninth to make it 4-3. However, a caught stealing and a groundout ended the game. Freshman Peter Serruto added two hits, while junior Kevin Welsh walked and singled to extend his on-base streak to 15 games.

SCORING
  • Indiana State scored three runs in the first inning, including a two-out, two-run single by Jarrod Watkins.
  • The Scarlet Knights picked up one in the second. Freshman Victor Valderrama reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout and Sclafani followed with a single to put two aboard. After a strikeout and fly out, sophomore Mike Nyisztor hit a two-out RBI single.
  • Valderrama scored again in the fourth to make it 3-2. He laid down a bunt single, moving to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. After Sclafani hit an advancing fly ball, Serruto came through with an RBI single.
  • A leadoff walk and a hit-and-run put Sycamores at the corners to start the eighth. After a strikeout, Luke Fegen chopped an RBI grounder.
  • Sclafani crushed a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the ninth.

NOTES
  • The Rutgers bullpen pitched 18.1 innings in the series and allowed only four earned runs for a 1.96 ERA.
  • The defense did not commit an error for the fourth time this season. Nyisztor threw out a runner at third from centerfield to prevent a run in the second.
  • The Scarlet Knights fell to 3-6 in games decided by two runs or less.
  • The game-time temperature was 80 degrees.
  • Indiana State won for the 12th time in 13 games.
