Softball Treks to Penn State; Sunday Slated for BTN

Schedule Change: Friday's game has been moved up to a 1 p.m. start
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (April 11, 2019) - Rutgers softball continues a six-game Big Ten road swing from April 12-14 at Penn State. With rain in the forecast, the schedule has been shifted slightly, with Friday's game moving up to a 1 p.m. start.
Sunday's scheduled game at 12 noon will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network with Lisa Byington and Elyse Menaker on the call.
The Scarlet Knights (17-19, 1-8) are looking for their second Big Ten victory of the season at Penn State (20-21, 4-7) after scoring their first win over Ohio State on Saturday for the first time since 2015. Penn State leads the all-time series 31-23 overall since 1980, and 9-3 as Big Ten opponents. Rutgers has won three out of the last four, however, winning the 2018 season series two out of three in Piscataway last spring.

• Rutgers' victory over Ohio State on Saturday was its first since 2015, as the Buckeyes now lead the all-time Big Ten series 13-2 since the beginning of 2015. The win disrupted a 12-game streak by Ohio State in the series.The triumph was Rutgers' highest RPI win – Ohio State was No. 33 last week – since a 3-1 victory over Hofstra (RPI 33) on March 27, 2014. The win boosted Rutgers' RPI to No. 99, the first time RU has been in the Top 100 since April 12, 2015 (No. 70).
• Rutgers produced its first seven-game winning streak since April 2015 from Feb. 28 - March 15. During the streak, Rutgers won back-to-back games by shutout (4-0 over Virginia and 8-0 over Robert Morris) for the first time since blanking Villanova twice in 2014. Over the seven-game run, Rutgers boosted its batting average by 32 points to .266 and lowered its ERA by 0.96 to 3.20.
• Senior shortstop Jess Hughes is ranked eighth among the NCAA Division I softball active leaders in runs scored with 189. She also ranks eighth with 134 career walks drawn. The New Jersey native is ranked 25th in the nation currently with her 13 doubles, and is third in the Big Ten in runs scored per game at 0.94. She comes in at 3rd in the Big Ten in on-base percentage (.496) and fifth in steals (16).
• Junior outfielder Anyssa Iliopoulos ranks 10th in the Big Ten with a .694 slugging percentage and 13th with 29 RBIs. Iliopoulos slashed .526/.654/.895 during Rutgers' seven-game win streak with 10 runs scored and six RBIs. Nineteen of her 36 hits (53%) have gone for extra bases.
• Freshman catcher Katie Wingert's 10th home run of the season was a go-ahead two-run shot in extra innings to help beat Ohio State on April 6. The rookie is slashing .294/.383/.627 overall and leads the team with six RBIs in Big Ten games. Defensively, she has a .972 fielding percentage from behing the plate, and has thrown out eight runners with a 73% stolen base allowed rate.
• Freshman pitcher Corah Price leads the staff in innings (107.0), ERA (3.40), WHIP (1.21) and strikeouts (73). The rookie has a pair of saves and a 2.81 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Price's nine strikeouts against Robert Morris was the program's most in a game since nine on March 18, 2016.
• First-year head coach Kristen Butler won her first game at the helm of the Scarlet Knights on Saturday, Feb. 9 against Jacksonville State. A former SEC Player of the Year and record-setting professional softball player in the United States and Japan, Butler has spent the last four seasons turning around the program as head coach at Toledo while earning the 2018 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honor.
