Murray Honored as Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

Junior struck out a career-high nine over six one-hit innings

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After striking out a career-high nine over six one-hit and scoreless innings against Michigan State, junior Tevin Murray of the Rutgers baseball team was awarded Big Ten Pitcher of the Week in a Monday release from the league office. The performance capped the Scarlet Knights' 4-0 week and first Big Ten sweep since joining the conference.

Murray is the second RU pitcher to claim Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, joining Howie Brey from April 4, 2016. The Scarlet Knights have earned a Big Ten weekly honor in consecutive weeks for the first time, as senior Carmen Sclafani garnered Big Ten Player of the Week last Monday.

"This is a well-deserved honor for Tevin," head coach Joe Litterio said. "He has been working hard every week with coach Cundari and it was great to see it pay off. He had great command and was able to keep their hitters off balance. His performance gave the team a chance to build a lead and to get a win."

Murray started his outing against the Spartans retiring 11 of the first 12 hitters before an error started the fifth inning. He ended up taking a no-hitter two outs into the sixth before a double went down as the only MSU hit of the day. Combined with freshman Garrett French, junior Steven Acosta and senior Serafino Brito, Rutgers pitched its first one-hitter since May 4, 2004 versus Lafayette.

Murray has now had six outings this season with six or more strikeouts and ranks No. 31 nationally with 12.13 per nine innings. He has 53 punchouts in 39.1 innings. In addition, the left-hander is first in the Big Ten with a .145 batting average against in league play and fifth at .201 overall.

In three Big Ten starts so far, Murray, from Ringtown, Pennsylvania, sits second among conference pitchers with a 1.06 ERA. He did not permit an earned run in five innings at Iowa and allowed two over six versus Ohio State.

Prior to Brey in 2016, the previous time a Scarlet Knight won a weekly league pitching award was April 1, 2013 when Tyler Gebler earned Big East Pitcher of the Week.

Rutgers (13-19, 5-4) vaulted up into a tie for fifth in the Big Ten standings after sweeping Michigan State. It was the first conference weekend sweep for the team since May 9-11, 2014 versus USF in the American Athletic Conference. RU, back in action Wednesday at home against Hofstra, enters the week on a five-game winning streak as winners in seven of the last nine.
