Fred Hill Memorial Celebration

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers Athletics celebrated former baseball head coach Fred Hill with a memorial on Saturday, May 11. The event was held inside the building named for the skipper, the Fred Hill Training Complex. Director of athletics Pat Hobbs delivered a speech to open, followed by longtime Scarlet Knight Glen Gardner, former player and coach Darren Fenster and son Jim Hill. Evelyn Hill, wife of 62 years, was in attendance along with their six children (Nancy, Fred, Linda, Jim, Tracey and Karen) and their families, friends and supporters.
Hill passed away March 2 at age 84. The Verona, New Jersey, native totaled 1,089 collegiate wins, including 941 in 30 years leading the Scarlet Knights. He earned 11 NCAA Regional appearances, 12 regular season conference championships and eight conference tournament titles during his tenure at Rutgers. Hill sent 73 players to professional baseball, with 12 making the big leagues, and developed 20 All-Americans. Hill is a member of American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Scarlet Knights played a game the same day and paid tribute with "HILL" on the back of each jersey. The number 24, which is reitred by the program, was also painted on Bainton Field.
