Suzie and Jeff Torborg support three scholarships for the Scarlet Knights’ baseball and softball programs
MOUNTAINSIDE, N.J. (Sept. 8, 2019) – Rutgers baseball and softball supporters Suzie and Jeff Torborg saw their family name dedicated to the brand-new Jeff Torborg Youth Baseball Field at Echo Lake Park on Saturday.
The Rutgers alumni attended the Sept. 7 dedication of the new field, which was built on top of a hill in a scenic park the couple frequented since early childhood in Union County, the 23-year home of the Torborgs and their three sons.
Rutgers' sophomore catcher Peter Serruto and Director of Operations Peter Barron from the baseball program, and head softball coach Kristen Butler were also in attendance in celebration of the Torborg Family's longtime support of three athletic scholarships at their alma mater.
Jeff Torborg is a baseball legend from Union County and Rutgers University. The Westfield, N.J. native and All-State catcher at Westfield High went on to set a Rutgers and NCAA record with a .540 batting average during an All-America 1963 season. Torborg was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and enjoyed a 10-year career in Major League Baseball, where he caught three no-hitters – including Sandy Koufax's perfect game. Following his playing career, Torborg managed for five MLB teams and coached for 10 more in the New York Yankees organization.
A 1994 inductee to the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame, Torborg also served as a radio and television baseball broadcaster for 12 years.
The Varisty R Letterwinner Association connected the Rutgers representatives with the Torborgs at the dedication. Founded in 2014, the Varsity R Letterwinners Association is a structured support system that provides Rutgers Letterwinners opportunities to remain connected, engaged, and invested with Rutgers Athletics and their sport specific programs.
