Scarlet Knights have raised over $51,000 since 2013, set goal for $10,000 in 2020
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball once again is teaming up with Vs. Cancer in the fight against pediatric cancer. The Scarlet Knights have raised over $51,000 towards the cause since 2013. More children die from cancer in the United States than any other disease.
RU will host its annual Vs. Cancer game on Sunday, April 26 versus Indiana at Bainton Field.
"We are excited to once again partner with Vs. Cancer and The Marisa Tufaro Foundation to help in the fight against childhood cancer," head coach Steve Owens said. "I cannot think of a more important cause to help with and we are hopeful that many friends and families of our players will rally and support the team's effort to reach the goal."
The goal to raise $10,000 has been set for 2020. In partnership with Vs. Cancer, Rutgers baseball has selected the pediatric oncology unit at Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to receive a portion of the funds raised.
In addition, the Marisa Tufaro Foundation announced for the second-straight year that it will match the Scarlet Knights' fundraising efforts with a donation of up to $5,000 to Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital's child life program. Started by pediatric brain cancer survivor and former collegiate athlete, Chase Jones, Vs. Cancer empowers any sports team, any athlete, and any community to help kids with cancer. As a signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Vs. Cancer proceeds help fund child life programs in local hospitals, financial assistance funds for families experiencing a pediatric brain tumor diagnosis, and groundbreaking research to cure pediatric brain tumors.
Kimberly Roy-Canning, director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's Northeast region, understands how vital these athletes are to the nonprofit's mission. "The children and families we serve rely heavily on the support of our Vs. Cancer fundraising teams. We applaud the efforts and generous spirit of the Rutgers University Baseball team! On behalf of our foundation, and the 28,000 children and teens currently battling a brain tumor, thank you! With the support of this incredible team, we're fighting for healthier, happier futures for these kids!"
