Baseball Loses to Saint Peter’s

Schiekofer hits second homer of the season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 4, 2020) – Rutgers baseball (5-6) took a 6-3 loss to Saint Peter's (1-11) Wednesday at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights are now 1-1 at home this season.

"It didn't look like anyone was ready to play today," head coach Steve Owens said. "Our hitting was poor and our pitching was poor as well. When we did get something going offensively, we hit into a double play. We didn't score after the second inning in a midweek game, which is inexcusable. Obviously, we didn't have the team ready to play. Hopefully we'll learn a lesson that we have to show up to the field ready to play. Today we weren't."

Redshirt sophomore Richie Schiekofer went 3-for-4 with a solo homer for the Scarlet Knights. Both redshirt junior Danny DiGeorgio and sophomore Peter Serruto recorded an RBI double.

On the mound, sophomore Jared Bellissimo (1-1) retired the first seven faced, but allowed four runs in the third inning. Senior Jack Parkinson and freshman Matt Ciccone followed with one run permitted in two relief innings apiece, with senior Eric Reardon striking out the side in the eighth and facing the minimum in the ninth to post two zeros.

Ian Concevitch (1-2) pitched seven shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. He struck out five and allowed four hits and one walk. The Peacocks totaled 11 hits at the plate.

SCORING
  • The Scarlet Knights scored first for the eighth-straight game with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Schiekofer lifted the first pitch of the inning over the wall in left for his second homer of the season. Junior Sam Owens then walked on four pitches, but was forced out on a fielder's choice hit by senior Kevin Welsh. Next up, Serruto split the right-center gap for an RBI double. He would score two batters later on a two-out double to center hit by DiGeorgio.
  • The Peacocks used five hits in the top of the third to score four runs and take the lead.
  • A two-run homer by Trent Koerner in the sixth gave Saint Peter's a 6-3 advantage.
