Brito collects a career-high four hits and drives in four

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rutgers baseball (3-3) took the front end of a doubleheader and the second game of the series against Maryland (2-4) with a 9-3 victory Saturday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Scarlet Knights scored three runs in the top of the first and tacked on late on to even the four-game weekend series.

Chris Brito sparked the middle of the order with a career-high four hits (two doubles, two singles) and four driven in to raise his season total to 11 RBIs through six games. After reaching five times Friday, Danny DiGeorgio went 2-for-3 with a homer, walk, a hit by pitch and three runs scored. Josh Rodriguez crushed a pair of homers from the leadoff spot in the order, as RU totaled 12 hits in the win.

On the mound, Ben Wereski earned his second win in as many starts with seven strikeouts and three runs allowed in 4.2 innings. The game was a seven-inning regulation contest. Kyle Muller stranded the tying run on base upon entering, collecting the final seven outs for the save.

SCORING

Rutgers posted three runs in the first inning for the second-straight game. Rodriguez led off with a single before Richie Schiekofer and DiGeorgio both reached on errors to load the bases. Brito then came through with a two-run single to right field. Two batters later, Jordan Sweeney delivered an opposite-field RBI single to make it 3-0.
The Terrapins hit a pair of solo homers to make it a 3-2 game after two innings.
In the third, DiGeorgio led off with a single and scored from first on a double to left-center by Brito.
Maryland used a sacrifice fly to cut it to 4-3 in the last of the third, but Wereski picked up a strikeout to strand two in scoring position and keep the lead.
The Scarlet Knights upped their advantage to 7-3 in sixth with three insurance runs. Rodriguez lifted a homer to left and DiGeorgio repeated two batters later. Brito followed with his second double of the game, stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Sweeney.
Rodriguez slammed his second homer in the seventh and Brito later ripped an RBI single to cap the scoring.
