COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rutgers baseball (4-4) cut a five-run deficit to two with three runs in the sixth, but Maryland (3-5) answered with two in the bottom half and held on for a 9-5 win in the Sunday series finale at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Terrapins previously won on Friday, 13-8, with the Scarlet Knights sweeping the Saturday doubleheader, 9-3 and 8-7, to split the weekend.
Â
"We got off to a bad start on the mound and couldn't stop it," head coach
Steve Owens said. "We got behind to a good team. Sinibaldi settled it down and really showed a lot out there as a freshman in a tough spot. Our offense battled back to get within two, but they expanded on us. We got another good starter out of the game, but we were outplayed and outpitched today."
Â
In his second collegiate appearance,
Justin Sinibaldi worked 3.2 innings of long relief with five strikeouts to keep the score within striking distance.
Tevin Murray followed with 1.1 scoreless innings, while
Eric Reardon sat down all five batters faced with three inherited runners stranded.
Â
Offensively,
Jordan Sweeney lifted a solo homer and added an RBI double.
Chris Brito blasted his sixth long ball of the season and now leads the team with 15 RBIs on the season.
Â
Justin Savacool picked up the win for the Terrapins with six strikeouts and five earned runs allowed in 5.2 innings. Maryland collected nine hits at the plate.
Â
- Rutgers scored first for the third time in four games this series with one in the first inning. Josh Rodriguez and Richie Schiekofer both singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Danny DiGeorgio then connected for an RBI fielder's choice.
- The Terrapins put their first five runners on base in the first inning and scored three times. The home team then picked up four hits and added three more in the second to take a 6-1 lead.
- Sweeney lifted his third homer of the season in the fifth, a solo shot.
- Maryland answered with a run on a sacrifice fly in the last of the fifth to take a 7-2 advantage.
- The Scarlet Knights rallied for three in the sixth to make it a two-run game. Brito blasted a solo homer over the batter's eye with one out. Evan Sleight followed with a walk, with Grant Shulman also drawing ball four with two outs to put two for Sweeney, who ripped an RBI double to right-center. Mike Nyisztor next came up as a pinch hitter and recorded an RBI single.
- Matthew Shaw and Randy Bednar hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the sixth to give Maryland a four-run lead, 9-5.
Â
The Scarlet Knights return to New Jersey for their home opener Friday against Ohio State to begin a three-game series. First pitch at Bainton Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Â
"I'm really pleased with where we are at right now," Owens said. "We are 4-4 having played some good teams. We have played well, established ourselves as a different type of team. If people are paying attention, they have seen a lot of improvements on the field. We are excited to get back home."
