Baseball Drops Nightcap to Indiana, 4-2

Stanavich strikes out seven in 3.1 innings of relief

MINNEAPOLIS – Rutgers baseball (2-1) took its first loss of the season in a 4-2 decision against Indiana (2-1) in the second of two games Saturday inside U.S. Bank Stadium. The Scarlet Knights previously beat the Hoosiers, 2-1, Friday, and Minnesota, 16-1, earlier in the day.

Dale Stanavich highlighted the RU action with seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief in his team debut. Aaron Winkler followed with a perfect frame on seven pitches in his first appearance as a Scarlet Knight. Brent Teller made the start and lasted 3.2 innings with two earned runs against. The pitching staff has a worked to a 1.73 ERA through three games overall.

Offensively, Jordan Sweeney and Danny DiGeorgio both collected RBIs. Rutgers threatened with the tying run on base in the eighth, but Matt Litwicki picked up the last four outs for the save. McCade Brown struck out 12 in seven innings to earn the win for the Hoosiers.

SCORING
  • The Hoosiers loaded the bases with no outs in the first before Teller retired the next two batters. However, a bases-loaded walk pushed one cross.
  • Indiana's Grant Richardson connected for a solo homer in the third and a passed ball allowed another in the fourth to make it 3-0. Morgan Colopy homered in the sixth.
  • Rutgers dented the scoreboard in the seventh. Brito was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by DiGeorgio.
  • In the eighth, Sweeney lifted a sacrifice fly with bases loaded, but two runners were left  on.
