Baseball Falls in Weekend Finale at Minnesota

Scarlet Knights with eight home runs in first four games

MINNEAPOLIS – Rutgers baseball (2-2) fell behind early and could not recover in a 13-8 loss to Minnesota (1-2) Sunday inside U.S. Bank Stadium. The Scarlet Knights complete their opening pod by splitting four games against Indiana and the host Golden Gophers.

"You can't win giving up nine runs in the first two innings," head coach Steve Owens said. "We didn't pitch well at the beginning and it's a tough hole to dig out of. We did some decent stuff offensively. Danny had a good day, Brad played well. I thought those were the highlights. Everyone got to pitch this weekend to give us a chance evaluate facing another opponent. In general, not the way we wanted today to go. Minnesota hit every mistake and made it tough for us to come back. There were a lot things to build on from this weekend, other things to fix. We'll get home and get ready for Maryland next weekend."

Danny DiGeorgio clubbed a solo homer and a grand slam to record five RBIs, while Josh Rodriguez hit a solo shot to make it eight long balls (three grand slams) for the team on the weekend. Ryan Lasko, Bradley Norton and Jordan Sweeney (three) joined DiGeorgio and Rodriguez with multiple knocks in a 14-hit showing.

RU used seven pitchers on the day, with Nate McLain (1.2 innings) and Eric Reardon (one inning) both recording shutout appearances. Jayson Hoopes took the loss in his first collegiate start. For Minnesota, Tom Skoro earned the win with two runs allowed in six innings.
