PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball (11-10) carried a 10-7 lead into the ninth inning, but Iowa (13-9) took advantage of an error to score seven unearned runs to win the series opener, 14-12, Friday at Bainton Field. The game featured six lead changes.
Â
"We squandered the game, we gave it to them," head coach
Steve Owens said. "You have to play 27 outs defensively and we continue to struggle out of the bullpen. Our offense did a tremendous job against the best starter in the conference. Nate settled it down in the middle innings, but we gave up too many walks and hits late. We have to stick together as a team and have been resilient this season coming back after a Friday loss. Tomorrow we will challenge the guys to come out with great energy, a lot of baseball left to play this weekend."
Â
Facing the Big Ten's ERA leader in Trenton Wallace (1.87), the Scarlet Knights drew six walks and posted four hits to score five times in the first four innings. A four-run sixth against the bullpen built a 10-6 lead, but the Hawkeyes scored one on a passed ball in the eighth and followed a dropped foul ball with two outs in the ninth to score seven times. The Scarlet Knights did respond with two in the bottom half and brought the tying run up to the plate, but came up short.
Â
Kevin Welsh sparked the offense with a career-high four RBIs, while
Ryan Lasko also knocked in four with a three-run homer for his seventh of the season.
Danny DiGeorgio returned the lineup for the first time since March 20 and went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks, two RBIs and three runs.
Mike Nyisztor was also on four times with a pair of singles and walks.

On the mound,
