Homers Hurt Baseball in Extra-Inning Loss at Northwestern

Welsh hit go-ahead shot in the ninth

EVANSTON, Ill. – Kevin Welsh lifted a two-run homer to put Rutgers baseball (9-9) on top in the ninth, but a two-out long ball in the bottom half and another solo shot in the 12th inning led Northwestern (11-8) to a 6-5 extra-inning win Friday at Miller Park. The Wildcats hit five of the game's seven homers.

"I thought Harry gave a good start, pitched out of some tough spots," head coach Steve Owens said. "He was victimized by a couple home runs, but kept us in there. We were able to battle back late with a couple two-run home runs, one by Ryan Lasko and one by Kevin Welsh. Both were very big hits for us. And then we played three more innings after not being able to get the last out in the ninth. They victimized us for another homer in the 12th.

It was a really tough game to lose, any walk-off is. It seems like there's been a lot of those both ways this year. Overall, I wasn't pleased with our pitching giving up five home runs and our hitting for not coming through in the plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the game. There wasn't much production, we need to do a better job with situational hitting. It was a very emotional, tough game. Tomorrow, we are going to play early in the morning and have to be ready to play."

Welsh clubbed his fifth career homer, a two-run shot, to left with one out in the ninth to put the Scarlet Knights up, 5-4. Ryan Lasko had previously went deep for two in the eighth to trim a 4-1 deficit. RU is up to 28 home runs on the season.

Richie Schiekofer had a career-high four hits and was also hit by a pitch to reach all five trips.

On the mound, Harry Rutkowski worked seven innings with five strikeouts and four runs allowed. Parker Scott followed with a perfect inning before Kyle Muller retired both batters faced in relief. Nate McLain dealt two frames in extra innings. SCORING
