Baseball Loses One-Run Game at Penn State

Wereski deals seventh quality start of the season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers baseball (17-19) scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to erase a three-run deficit, but Penn State (15-20) scored one with two outs in the last of the eighth and held on for a 4-3 win Saturday at Medlar Field.

"We left 12 on base and out-hit them today," head coach Steve Owens said. "We only got two RBI hits, though. Ben got off to a tough start, and again we got ambushed early and didn't make the pitches needed to put up a zero. He then settled in and competed really well. We got back into the game, but made a second baserunning mistake with a chance to take the lead. In the bottom of the eighth, we had two strikes but couldn't put away the at bat and led to a walk. We are kind of snake-bitten right now and have to find a way to win the battles to get on the other end of the scoreboard."

Ben Wereski surrendered three runs with two outs in the first inning, but permitted just one baserunner over the next five innings. The left-hander notched his seventh quality start in 11 appearances with 6.2 innings pitched, six hits, four strikeouts and no walks. It was his fifth game with no walks and he now owns a 0.93 WHIP and 3.02 ERA on the season.

Offensively, Mike Nyisztor tied the game in the eighth with a two-run single, while Chris Brito knocked in a run in the seventh. Evan Sleight joined with a pair of hits and Danny DiGeorgio went 3-for-5. RU stranded 12 runners on base in hitting 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Conor Larkin allowed one run in 6.2 innings for Penn State. Tyler Shingledecker earned the win by recording the last five outs. Curtis Robison drew a two-out walk on a full count with bases loaded in the eighth that proved to be the difference.
SCORING
  • B1 | The Nittany Lions used three hits with two outs to plate three.
  • T7 | With two outs, Nyisztor and Richie Schiekofer singled to put runners at the corners. Brito then delivered a first-pitch RBI single to center to make it 3-1.
  • T8 | DiGeorgio led off with a single and Kevin Welsh reached via error to put two on. Victor Valderrama then boarded on a fielder's choice with an error on the play to load the bases. Then on the ninth pitch of the at bat, Nyisztor lined a two-run single to left to even the game at three.
  • B8 | Penn State put a runner at third with no outs. RU nearly escaped by recording two outs, but ball four to Robison pushed across the go-ahead run.
