PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After working seven scoreless innings to help complete the Rutgers baseball sweep at Nebraska,
Brent Teller was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday. The right-hander led the efforts in the Scarlet Knights' first road shutout in Big Ten play since joining the conference.
Â
"Brent feels really good physically and has been pitching with excellent tempo," head coach
Steve Owens said. "He is throwing hard with a really good breaking ball and really a good changeup, working ahead in the count with quality strikes. Plus, he has gotten some weak contact and kept his pitch count low to be able to work deep into the game."
Â
Teller started off his outing against the previously first-place and No. 19 Cornhuskers by striking out the side in the first inning on the way to eight punchouts. The right-hander retired 10 of the first 11 batters and allowed just six baserunners in the performance (three walks, two hits, one hit by pitch), only having one inning with two on.
Kyle Muller and
Dale Stanavich each logged a scoreless frame after to secure the 6-0 shutout.
Â
Also beating a ranked opponent in Michigan the previous start, Teller has worked 14.1 innings with 16 strikeouts and only four hits and two runs permitted combined his last two times on the mound.
Â
"I felt great leading up to the game," Teller said on Sunday. "It was great to score an early run to be able to pitch with the lead and attack hitters."

Â
The Scarlet Knights (17-13) won all three games at Nebraska for the program's first Big Ten road sweep and became the first Big Ten opponent to take all three against the Cornhuskers in a series at Hawks Field. RU is riding a five-game winning streak, all at a ranked opponent, and holds a 12-6 road record in 2021.
Â
This marks the sixth Big Ten weekly honor for Rutgers this year, totaling seven the previous six years combined. The other Scarlet Knights to earn Big Ten Pitcher of the Week were
Tevin Murray (April 15, 2019) and
Howie Brey (April 4, 2016).
Â
RU is back home this weekend to host a four-day, three-team pod at Bainton Field versus first-place and No. 17 Indiana (20-9) and second-place Nebraska (20-10). The action begins against the Hoosiers on Friday at 2 p.m. In accordance with state, local and campus guidelines, Rutgers Athletics will increase fan capacity at Bainton Field. A pass list will be maintained for player guests, while a limited number of spots will be made available for the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis. Click
