Baseball Takes Nightcap, Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at Hawaii

Four relief pitchers combine to deal eight scoreless innings

HONOLULU – Scoring three runs in the first inning, tacking on late and seeing four relievers combine for eight scoreless innings, Rutgers baseball (12-2) took the nightcap at Hawaii (5-10), 6-2, to sweep the Saturday doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium. The Scarlet Knights won their nation-leading 11th road game.

"Playing doubleheaders is about taking it one game at a time," head coach Steve Owens said. "You have to be a good team to win both games against another good opponent. We've done it twice this year, both times after our only two losses. I told the team I was really pleased with their intensity, focus and grit to play an entire day."

Ben Gorski worked a career-high four innings as the first reliever in. The right-hander struck out five and has pitched 9.2 scoreless innings to start the season with 10 punchouts. Nate McLain followed with a clean sixth, Parker Scott handled the seventh and Dale Stanavich collected the final six outs for his fourth save. That included striking out the side in the ninth.

The pitching staff has allowed three earned runs or less in 10-of-14 games.

Andy Axelson caught a runner stealing and picked up two hits and two runs offensively. RU scored a runner with less than two outs from third 4-of-5 opportunities.

"We got a lot of contributions from a lot of different people today," Owens said. "Kollar pitched a gem in the first game and the offense was great. Then in the second game, our bullpen stepped up. Gorski kept the game right there and gave us his longest outing. Nate and Parker did their job, and Dale came in and closed it out in a bounce-back appearance."

The Scarlet Knights also swept a doubleheader two weeks ago at UNCW and have begun a season 12-2 for the first time since 1962.

SCORING
  • T1 | The Scarlet Knights jumped out early with three runs. Mike Nyisztor started the game with a double, and three batters later, Ryan Lasko lined an RBI double. A pair of Hawaii errors allowed Nick Cimillo and Lasko to cross with two outs.
  • B1 | Hawaii plated two runs on three hits.
  • T7 | RU tacked on an insurance run to make it 4-2. Axelson led off with a single up the middle, took second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nyisztor. With the infield drawn in, Danny DiGeorgio ripped an RBI single through the left side.
  • T8 | Chris Brito reached on a three-base error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joshua Kuroda-Grauer.
  • T9 | The lead grew to 6-2 when Axelson doubled, moved up on another sacrifice bunt by Nyisztor and scored on an RBI groundout by Cimillo.

The series finale is set for Sunday at 7:05 p.m. ET/1:05 p.m. local.

"Hawaii has some good pitchers," Owens said. "They are a good opponent. They are well coached and have talent throughout the roster. Tomorrow will be a good test to see if we can win a road four-game series or split. I'm happy about today, we'll enjoy dinner tonight and get rested up for tomorrow."
