Rutgers Drops Series Opener to Nebraska Omaha

Kollar pitches gem, but offense shut out in 1-0 loss

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite one of the best performances of the season by the pitching staff, the Rutgers baseball team (12-4) was unable to score any runs in a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of Nebraska Omaha (6-11) on Friday night at Tal Anderson Field.

Jared Kollar did his part for the Scarlet Knights, putting forth his best game to date as a member of the team. He tossed 7.1 scoreless innings, struck out a career-high 10 batters, allowing just two hits and no walks.

Ben Gorski entered with one out in the 8th inning and struck out both batters he faced. In the bottom of the 9th in a 0-0 game, Dale Stanavich allowed a leadoff walk before a single into left field scored the runner from second base to end the game and give the Mavericks the 1-0 win.

"The pitching was great today. We struck out 14 guys and walked one. and he scored the winning run. All three guys pitched well." head coach Steve Owens said.

Rutgers didn't have any issues getting runners on base, but the Scarlet Knights were unable to push those runners home, leaving 10 men on the base in the game.

Richie Schiekofer (2-4), Tony Santa Maria (2-4, triple), Nick Cimillo (2 BB) and Garrett Callaghan (1-2, 2 BB) all reached base multiple times in the game but could not make it home.

"You got to get a hit with guys on base," Owens said. "We had two strikes on us all day and then we made weak contact with two strikes. We just didn't get it done offensively today. We played good defense and pitched great. We have got to come out and get the sticks going tomorrow and try to win a series."
