Dale Stanavich, Brian Fitzpatrick Chosen in Day Two of MLB Draft
Jul 19 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 19, 2022) – Two Rutgers baseball players added their names to a long list of Scarlet Knights chosen in the MLB Draft when Dale Stanavich and Brian Fitzpatrick were chosen on Day 2 of the draft in Los Angeles.
Dale Stanavich was the first Rutgers player selected on Monday, as the Miami Marlins chose him with the 232nd overall pick in the 8th round.
Stanavich had a dominant 2022 season, establishing himself as the best closer in the Big Ten. He racked up 10 saves, eight of which were at least 4-out saves. He was named All-Big Ten First Team, ABCA All-Region First Team, All-ECAC and to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watchlist.
"We are very excited for Dale to enter professional baseball," head coach Steve Owens said. "He has shown steady improvement each of the past two seasons and has performed at a very high level on a consistent basis. He will be ready to get hitters out at the end of games right away. He has the talent and mentality of all good back-end relievers."
He finished the 2022 season with a 2.10 ERA in 34.1 innings across 22 appearances. He struck out 51 batters to just nine walks, did not give up a home run and held opponents to a miniscule .195 batting average.
In his two seasons as a Scarlet Knight, Stanavich pitched in 39 games, totaling 15 saves with a 2.51 ERA in 57.1 innings. He allowed 48 hits, 22 runs (16 earned), 18 walks, had 81 strikeouts and limited hitters to a .223 batting average.
Soon after Stanavich went off the board, Brian Fitzpatrick saw his name called when the Milwaukee Brewers took him with the 312th overall pick in the 10th round.
Fitzpatrick battled through adversity in 2022 to become an MLB draft pick. After entering the season as the team's top starting pitcher, Fitzpatrick suffered an injury right before Big Ten play started. He worked his way back into playing shape and was able to start in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal against Indiana. He threw 4.0 scoreless innings against the Hoosiers, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out six batters to lead the Scarlet Knights to the Big Ten Tournament championship game.
"Fitz stayed positive and worked very hard to get back on the field for us at the end," head coach Steve Owens said. "He pitched great in the Big Ten Tournament and continued to excel with his starts in the Cape Cod League, throwing the entire month without giving up a run. His size and pitch repertoire could project him to continue his role as a starting pitcher."
Fitzpatrick competed in the Cape Cod League in summer of 2022, establishing himself as one of the top arms in the most prestigious collegiate summer league in the country. In four starts for the Brewster Whitecaps, Fitzpatrick did not allow a single run. He threw 19.0 scoreless innings, giving up 11 hits and issuing just two walks, while striking out 19 batters.
In his Rutgers career, Fitzpatrick appeared in 23 games with a 7-3 record and 5.24 ERA, with his ERA improving by at least 1.00 each season. He struck out 59 batters in 46.1 innings of work, while yielding a .229 batting average against.
The 2022 MLB Draft marks the first time since 2003 that Rutgers has had two players selected in the top 10 rounds. In 2003, Bobby Brownlie was selected with Pick #21 in Round 1 by the Chicago Cubs and Val Majewski was selected with Pick #76 in Round 3 by the Baltimore Orioles.
