Maryland Transfer Gavin Stellpflug Joins Rutgers

Stellpflug is an NJ native who joins Scarlet Knights after two seasons with Maryland

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 8, 2022) – The Rutgers baseball team welcomes another strong right-handed arm to its pitching staff with the addition of Gavin Stellpflug Maryland. Stellpflug will be a junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

New Jersey native who helped Maryland win a Big Ten Championship in 2022 and earned valuable experience pitching in a pair of NCAA Regional games against UConn.

Head Coach Steve Owens: "Gavin was a highly recruited and very successful NJ pitcher who we welcome back home.  We are excited for him to have a fresh opportunity to compete for innings and a role on a staff that lost 3 starters. He has gained valuable experience over the past 2 years and has pitched in high leverage situations against quality opponents.  We are confident that he will continue to work hard and will impact our team positively."
 
2022 (Sophomore): Struck out three against Siena in 1 inning pitched (3/20) ... struck out one and gave up an unearned run against Ohio State (4/17) ... gave up two hits and struck out one in 2.0 innings against Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament (5/28) ... struck out two in an inning of work against UConn in the College Park Regional (6/6)
 
2021 (Freshman): Made four appearances out of the bullpen … made his collegiate debut against Rutgers (3/13) … struck out one at Nebraska (4/11) … tossed 0.2 of an inning against Minnesota (4/30) … tossed a scoreless inning and struck out two at #24 Michigan (5/22)
 
Prior to College: Starred at Somerville HS ... helped the Pioneers to a state championship and 20-5 record in 2018 and a 18-6 record in 2019 ... ranked the No. 18 right-handed pitching prospect in the state of New Jersey per Perfect Game ... also played travel ball for the Diamond Jacks
 
Personal: Son of James and Jeanine Stellpflug ... has three siblings, Kolbie, Xander and Piper ... earned a 3.7 GPA at Somerville ... volunteered and led charity efforts in the cancer center at RWJ University Hospital Somerset ... sports hero is Roy Halladay … was a recipient of Kevin Gilbert Scholarship … intends to major in criminal justice
