BUIES CREEK, N.C. (February 17, 2023) – Rutgers baseball fell to Campbell by a score of 11-5 in its season opener on Friday night.
The Camels got on the board early, using a two-out, 2-run triple in the first to get out to a 2-0 lead. They built on their hot start, scoring in each of the first four innings to jump out to an 8-0 lead.
The Scarlet Knights got the bats going in the top of the fifth.
Trevor Cohen singled and
Ryan Lasko doubled to start the frame.
Tony Santa Maria singled with two outs to get RU on the board and make it an 8-2 game.
Campbell responded in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs and using a bases-clearing double to push the lead to 11-2.
In the top of the seventh,
Chris Brito helped the Scarlet Knights inch back with a 2-run double. RU was able to add another on a
Trevor Cohen RBI double in the eighth.
A pair of true freshmen had strong debuts for Rutgers.
Trevor Cohen started in left field and went 4-for-4 with an RBI double, while
Ethan Bowen came in during the sixth inning and finished the game for RU, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings with no hits and four strikeouts.
The Scarlet Knights return to action against Campbell at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
