Mar 26 | Baseball
STORRS, Conn. – Rutgers baseball dropped its series finale to UConn on Sunday, falling by a score of 9-7 on a walk-off home run.
With the result, the Scarlet Knights (12-11) were swept by the Huskies (16-5) after also dropping both games of Friday's doubleheader.
For the third straight game, RU was able to get out to a lead first, this time on a Ryan Lasko solo home run on the first pitch of the game. While the Scarlet Knights held a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, UConn responded with a pair of solo home runs to tie the game at 2-2.
Rutgers bounced back, taking a 3-2 lead with an RBI single off the bat of Josh Kuroda-Grauer. Maximus Martin then blasted his second home run of the week to lead off the fifth inning and make it 4-2. A wild pitch allowed Lasko to score later in the frame and make it 5-2.
The Huskies kept their foot on the gas and cut into the lead with a two-out, 2-run home run in the fifth to make it 5-4. They would take the lead in the sixth on another home run, this one a 2-run shot to make it 6-5.
Lasko had an answer of his own in the eighth, belting his second home run of the game, this one a 2-run shot, to give Rutgers back the lead at 7-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, UConn was down to its last out, but had two men on base. A 3-run home run would walk it off for the Huskies and complete the sweep. UConn scored all 9 of its runs via the long ball, hitting five home runs on the day.
Rutgers will return to action on Wednesday afternoon for a home game against NJIT.
